This temple has been mentioned in the book of Mr. M A Thaky in his "Lower Dravida Desa" (page no 130)but not illustrated .

The author of this article hasidentified this temple in search of Muttaraya temples near Keeranur and tried illustrating its architectural features here.



The Shiva temple of Thiruppur consists of vimana, mukha mandapa with facing east. The vimana is an ekatala pure type with nagara tala. The vimana has padabandha adhishthana, bhitti, prastara, griva.(sikhara and stupi are not seen) Upana(buried in the soil), jagati(slightly seen), octagonal kumuda, gala and pada flanked by kampas and pattika forms the features of padabandha adhishthana. Above the pattika runs the thin kampa above which raise the bhitti of the vimana. the bhitti is cantoned by brahmakantha pilasters four on each side. the karna sections are represented with single pilaster and the bhadra section is represented with a pair of pilasters.

The brahmakantha pilasters have upper ornamentation of kattu, kalasa, tadi, kumbha, pali, phalaka, virakantha. Above the pilasters rests the plain angular potikas. Potikas extend its limbs to bear the uttira. Above the thin vajana is the valabhi. The roof is extended as a flexed overhanging kapota. A pair of kudu arches is seen on each side; the flow from the finial is formed as scrolls and arched(Except one on south and one in the east). The edges of the kapota are rimmed and decked with chandramandalas. Besides, the corners are tried ornamentation with konapattas. Above the roof is the bhumi desa represented with yazhi frieze and the corners are adorned with makara heads. The bhumidesa marks the end of the tala and above the bhumidesa rests the vedica complex. Above the aditala at the three corners Nandis are shown seated and the north west corner has no Nandhi seated in its place.



The griva is resting on the vedica complex. The walls of the griva are decked on all the sides with a pair of brahmakantha pilasters each one in the corners. The pilasters directly bear the uttira of the griva. Above the uttira is the vajana, valabhi. Besides, on the cardinal directions deities are shown except on the west; The koshtha simply a rectangular shaft without flanking pilasters and the deities are formed as bas-relief forms on the walls of the koshtha. The finial of the koshthas are formed on the body of the un finished sikhara.chandramandalas in the ridges but the body of the sikhara is not seen.



The mukha mandapa has the padabandha adhihsthana as like vimana, bhitti and prastara. The bhitti carry three pilaster on each side and the pilasters possess the same features of the vimana. The kapota has one kudu on the northern side with ornamentations, two on the southern side, one with ornamentation and one in the stage of formation and two on the eastern side, one with ornamentation and one in the stage of formation.

Uniqueness of this temple!
1)As like the other confirmed Muttaraya temples, this temple also has no Ghosthas in the Sanctum walls
2)As like Kaliapatti and visalur it looks smaller than any other normal temples in this region but slightly bigger than Kaliappatti. It absolutely resembles Visalur and Kaliapatti in terms of its Structure!
